Sit Down

Lord \”What am I to do?\” or \”Am I doing enough?\” I don\’t know about you, but I find myself asking this question more often than not, especially in seasons and times of uncertainty. But God reminded me this morning in my quiet time that sometimes the most faithful thing I can do is… sit down.

I came to Him with those questions, and some more. \”Lord, how am I going to pay this?\” \”Lord I just can\’t see how this is going to work out.\” \”Lord, I\’m doing what you told me to do & it\’s not working.\”

He led me to John 6:1-15, the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000. What stood out wasn\’t just the miracle, but the posture of the people. Jesus instructed the disciples to have them sit down. They weren\’t striving, running around in confusion, or trying to figure out how to make it happen, like I\’ve been doing. They simply obeyed His instruction to sit, and in that posture, they received the miraculous of God making a lot out of a little.

I was so moved by that revelation, and I had to come share it with someone. Because right now, I know I\’m not the only one that feels the weight of not knowing how certain things will come together. But in this story, God is showing & telling me & maybe some of you: \”Sit down. Be still. Position yourself to receive.\”

And yet, the story doesn’t end with sitting, because while the people rested, the disciples moved.

Because what also stood out to me is that while the people sat, the disciples still worked. They guided the crowd to sit, they noticed the boy with the loaves and fish, and they passed out the food. Their obedience looked different—it was active service. This reminded me that sometimes God calls us to sit and receive, and other times He calls us to serve and carry the miracle to others. Both are obedience & both are necessary.

What God showed me in this is that: Order matters – 1st He gave an instruction, Then, they obeyed. Then, He blessed abundantly. Which is a recurring theme in the bible. (Abraham\’s story, Moses\’ story, Joshua\’s story & more). Faith over sight – The disciples couldn\’t see how the masses would be fed, but Jesus already knew the plan. (Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding.) Posture of receiving – Sitting down wasn\’t passive, It was obedience & trust.

God is showing me that obedience doesn’t always look the same. Right now, He’s asking me to sit—to rest in His plan and posture myself to receive. But He also reminds me that there will be moments when He calls me to serve actively, like the disciples did, carrying the miracle to others. Both are necessary. Both are holy. And both require trust that He already knows the plan.

Maybe God is asking you to sit in this season, or maybe He’s asking you to serve. Either way, the miracle doesn’t depend on your striving—it depends on His plan. Whether He asks us to rest or to serve, the miracle comes not from our striving, but from His plan.
